Alta is the red dye painted on the feet, and sometimes the palms, of Bengali and Odia women for weddings, Durga Puja, and Pohela Boishakh. The designs are a solid red border with red-tipped toes, a red border with dots and a small leaf, and a bride's alta with a broad scalloped border and a paisley. Type a subject of your own and the design is drawn with it as a request.
- alta for Durga Puja
- a bridal alta for a wedding
- alta for Pohela Boishakh
- a reference for a red border
Frequently asked questions
- Is alta the same as mehndi?
- No. Alta is a red dye, while mehndi is a henna paste that stains the skin brown.
- What is the difference between the styles?
- Painted red shows broad red strokes, fine brush shows thin red lines in tight rows, and black outline draws the same designs in plain black to be painted in.
- Can I change the subject?
- Yes. Type a subject of your own and the design is drawn with it, as a request rather than a fixed result.
- Are these drawn on real feet?
- No. Each is a drawing on white paper, showing the design over the outline of a foot.
About toile
This page is a showcase and a starting point: nine samples already rendered, three readings of the pack crossed with three styles, each shown at the size and ratio it was made for. Take any of them further on the wall with a few words, or ask for all nine again under your own direction; a sign-in keeps what you make, and it is free while Toile is new. The recipe behind each sample — the subject, the style, the palette, the framing — travels with the image rather than staying private to the render: it is in the alt text of every sample and in the page's own structured data, so a search engine reads the same handles a person would.
