The akash kandil is the paper sky lantern that Maharashtrian homes hang outside the door at Diwali, the star shape above all. These are flat templates to print on card: a five-point star lantern, a six-sided lantern with a diya cut from each panel, and paper tails. Every piece has solid cut lines, dashed fold lines and glue tabs. The panels come plain, cut in a jaali pattern, or printed in colour.

  • a paper lantern craft for the Diwali week
  • a classroom craft for children
  • a decoration for a door or a balcony
  • a print-and-glue project for a family

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to make one?
Print the template on card, cut along the solid lines, fold along the dashed lines, then glue the tabs to close the shape.
What is a jaali cut?
A pattern of openings in the panel, here flowers, paisleys and diamonds, so light shows through the lantern.
Is the colour version already printed?
Yes. The panels are printed in flat saffron, red, yellow and magenta, with the cut and fold lines in black over them.
Can I ask for a different shape?
Yes. The direction field takes a change such as eight points or a lotus shape. A direction you type is a request, not a promised result.

About toile

This page is a showcase and a starting point: nine samples already rendered, three readings of the pack crossed with three styles, each shown at the size and ratio it was made for. Take any of them further on the wall with a few words, or ask for all nine again under your own direction; a sign-in keeps what you make, and it is free while Toile is new. The recipe behind each sample — the subject, the style, the palette, the framing — travels with the image rather than staying private to the render: it is in the alt text of every sample and in the page's own structured data, so a search engine reads the same handles a person would.
