The kolam drawn at the threshold on Puthandu, the Tamil new year on the first of Chithirai, in white rice flour. These nine are line designs to copy: a pulli kolam looping around a dot grid, a padi kolam of nested steps, and a round three-fruit kolam with a lamp above. Each comes as black lines, white flour lines on black, or a colour kolam. Type a different motif, such as a peacock, and the same styles carry it.
- a threshold design for Puthandu
- a dot-grid practice sheet for a child
- a classroom lesson on kolam
- a printed sheet for a Tamil household
Frequently asked questions
- What is a pulli kolam?
- A pulli kolam is a dot kolam: one continuous line loops around a grid of dots, and the dots are the guide for the drawing.
- Can a child copy these?
- Yes. The dot-grid style shows every dot, so the count and placement can be followed on paper.
- What does the three-fruit kolam show?
- The mukkani is a festival kolam of mango, jackfruit and banana, set in a round frame with a kuthuvilakku lamp above.
- Can I ask for a different design?
- Yes. Type the design you want, such as a peacock, and it is drawn in the same three styles as a sample.
About toile
This page is a showcase and a starting point: nine samples already rendered, three readings of the pack crossed with three styles, each shown at the size and ratio it was made for. Take any of them further on the wall with a few words, or ask for all nine again under your own direction; a sign-in keeps what you make, and it is free while Toile is new. The recipe behind each sample — the subject, the style, the palette, the framing — travels with the image rather than staying private to the render: it is in the alt text of every sample and in the page's own structured data, so a search engine reads the same handles a person would.
