A shadow puppet is a black silhouette cut from card, fixed to a stick and played behind a lit sheet. These nine pictures give three sets: wolf, rabbit, owl and crocodile silhouettes; a castle, a dragon, a crowned king and a tree; and a tall figure in the style of Javanese wayang kulit. Each comes as bold shapes, fine pierced and folk-art. Type a set, such as jungle or pirates, and the stick layout stays the same.
- a puppet theatre at home
- a story played behind a sheet in class
- a lesson on Javanese shadow puppets
- a family show for a birthday
Frequently asked questions
- What do the nine pictures show?
- Shadow puppet sheets in three sets, animals, fairy tale figures and a wayang kulit figure, each in three styles.
- How do I attach the puppet to a stick?
- Each sheet marks where the stick goes. Glue or tape the stick to that place on the back of the silhouette.
- What do the small holes do?
- They are cut through for eyes and patterns, so light shows through the figure.
- What is the wayang kulit figure?
- A tall figure in the style of Javanese wayang kulit, the leather shadow puppets of Java, with a long nose, jointed arms and a lace of punched holes.
About toile
This page is a showcase and a starting point: nine samples already rendered, three readings of the pack crossed with three styles, each shown at the size and ratio it was made for. Take any of them further on the wall with a few words, or ask for all nine again under your own direction; a sign-in keeps what you make, and it is free while Toile is new. The recipe behind each sample — the subject, the style, the palette, the framing — travels with the image rather than staying private to the render: it is in the alt text of every sample and in the page's own structured data, so a search engine reads the same handles a person would.
